I just got ahold of a whites 6000 di pro and it seems to be in great shape. Does anyone have one or has had one on here that can offer any advice? How long can a battery pack last out in the field? I was kind of surprised by it not weighing more that it looked. I used to have an eagle spectrum back in the early 90's but I remember that one being alot heavier than this one. It seems the battery did not last on the eagle very long either. I hated that about it. I have used it only briefly in my yard and it took me a minute or two to set it up correctly and quiet her down in order to use it. I am just curious of your thoughts about this unit. I have heard alot about these in the past but I have not read much recently and have forgotton anything I did read about the 6000 di pro. Any thoughts and opinions are welcome, Tim

Tim, my son had one of these and did will with it. However he never mentioned it being heavy since he was 6' 6". I remember the battery pack didn't last as long as the newer detectors since they have less battery drain. It was a little squirrelly in the Max setting mode.

My brother has one and swears he will never get rid of it. I have read posts elsewhere where guys say that the 6000 is the best coinshooter White's ever produced.

I have the SL and like it. The batteries last a long time and you can buy a pac that hold c-cells for a back up. The depth is good...a penny at 4-6 inches depending on soil. The meter is very accurate in terms of coin id. Never found any gold..but for year concentrated on coins and disc out pull tabs so I'm sure I missed some. I find it a bit heavy. Easy to ground balance and make adjustments, all around I like it but new technology is nagging at me and I want to try the Spectra, but I would not trade in my 6000. Don't know if that helps but those are my thoughts.

Yea these are helpful, what everyone is saying is great. Mine is the SL also. I am still trying to figure out the ground balancing thing on this one. Any tips on balancing this thing? I have the manual but, the tune button is what is throwing me off. Is the tune knob the same thing as threshold? When balancing yours, do you hold back on the pinpoint trigger and bounce your unit up and down? I know how to balance a machine but this is just kind of mind boggling. I just put everything on the preset P and put the GEB in auto trac. I am not balancing it per say but I did find a penny in my yard today......That is pretty good since I have always tested new units I get in my yard and have not found any change in a while with the other ones.

For ground balancing..place all the settings in preset...hold the coil straight out about waist high and push the tracking toggle switch up towards the meter..then place the detector 1 inch above the ground and drop the toggle switch to the lock/auto trac position and you should be good to go for the basics. Here are links that should help.

Thanks alot for the link. I do believe I have it down now. :headbang:

I just got one of these at a flea market. Had to replace the autobalance switch (not too much of a problem) and after that I followed the instructions on the bottom of the unit (and on the internet manual) and after practicing in the front yard on dropped coins I headed out for two public parks with sand/bark playgrounds.

Park 1 yielded one penny and one child's hair clip with a "jeweled" letter "Y" ! Park 2 was better...found 6 more pennies. I didn't check the dates on any of them, but doubt any were of value....fun though.

I have an old White's (can't remember the number off hand) but I got it at a yard sale in about '84 and it is probably from the 70's. The new one is a little more friendly in form and battery configuration.

I'm looking at getting some plastic "sleeves" that you slide a rechargeable "aa" battery into. The sleeve is the size of a "c" cell. This saves not buying rechargeable "c's" and a new charger that holds them. All my chargers are "aa" chargers. Anyone have thoughts on the battery situation?
Looking forward to using this one a bit...anyone found gold with this model ?

Just came across this thread...Have a 6000 Di Pro SL I bought new in 1984...Wouldn't take a penny less than $500 for it today. :headbang:

Gold? Yes...Recently sold a bunch of "found" scrap...$900+. :icon_thumleft:

I did not know they made a holder for aa batteries that will fit the C cell size units. I know it would work and it would be a little lighter but I do not think the batteries will last near as long unless you buy the lithium type. The battery drain would be the only issue I thinkl would be a problem but, I am not expert, Tim

I bought my 6000pro SL new back around '92 or '93 IIRC. Best dang detector I've ever owned! I will never get rid of it as long as it keeps working. I may buy a second unit, but I won't get rid of this one.

First off, when I ground balance, I ground balance on the ground, not a foot above.
The trick to getting a good ground balance and target ID is to find a clear patch of ground. Turn on the detector, put it in GEB and find an area without targets. Then start with the ground balance knob at preset. set to air, then lower the coil. If the threshold increases (it's seeing mineralization) increase the BG knob a touch and start over. If the threshold drops out, lower the BG setting. You want very little to no threshold change when you set the ground balance.

Second, it you have a lot of targets, whether good or trash, then lock the ground balance. If you let it auto-trac, it will be sensing metal more often, and trying to change the BG to compensate. The ground mineralization doesn't typically change much in a hunting area anyways (unless live in a mountainous area).

Last little hint..... If the area you are hunting has a lot of iron trash, you will do better when the ground is really dry. When the ground moisture is normal or damp, you will find deeper silver.
