Solved. I found this 1954 Franklin half the other day and I can't find anything about it. Any help is greatly appreciated!! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1463192651.633416.jpg

It is called a counterstamp. Another term used is countermark. Just something deliberately stamped on a coin by individuals after a coin is in circulation. I have somewhere near 1000 counterstamped coins. Sorry, nothing special here.

Time for coffee.

Finding a counterstamped coin IS a big deal. Not a common find at all. Great find!

What's the purpose of counterstamping?

in a lot of cases, the counterstamp will be a merchant name or such to use the coin as circulating advertising. other uses could be such as lucky coins, fraternal organization marks, etc.
