I found this in a neighbor's yard yesterday, and I have been searching the web for a direct-match, but to no avail.
Can anyone tell me of a website or proper wording for a better search? Heck, maybe someone can ID/date it by memory? The style should give me clues, and it DOES look similar to some WW2 items, but none truly match it. It brass with maybe a silver gilding (mostly gone) and is approximately 2" tall by 1 3/4" wide. Photographed wet for contrast...
I'm so glad I didn't hit it with the shovel or hand trowel because it's in great condition.
I assume it is military?
Thanks for any help/info!

It's officially called The Army Service Cap Device. That one is the larger one used on Officer caps. Those screw back emblems were sold into the 80's and 90's at least, maybe longer. I bought one for my service cap in 1983. The Army uses a gold patina and Air Force uses silver.

I looked for a match but found none. I think the key to ID it is the shield. The lines on the shield are very different than all others I saw. Good Luck!
I agree! The vertical lines above the shield bar, and several other small anomalies make it unique from any that I have found, anyway. Some of the other items that I dug that day hovered around 1890ish, including this perfume label, and (at least according to the listed patent-dates) this American Waltham Watch Co 'container'(?) Not saying the Screw-back Seal is that old, but anything on this hunt could be that old... I'm calling this hunt 'epic' because it was a 2-hour quickie that turned out to be MUCH better than I expected! BTW- I'm open to info on anything pictured here (but maybe I should open a new post?)
