Metal detecting in the back yard of a friends house in upstate NY and found this dog head piece. It detected in the silver range. I was going to toss it but I liked the primitive look it had. Would anyone know if this is just a fragment of a figurine or would this be a decoration of something larger? Thanks.

What are the dimensions? Is it made of iron? If not, what? Welcome to the forum! Interesting :) Breezie

Hi Breezie, it's approx. 1 3/4 wide. I'm not sure of the metal, it was picking up as a quarter on my father in laws detector. It is rounded and looks to have been hollow inside when it was complete.

Well it looks disturbing in it's current condition... Lol.. But my guess would be an antique/ vintage pin. Often had jewels for the eyes. And tbe backs are hollowed out.

This is really just a hunch on my part.

The size is right and the eye does have a hole in it. But you are right, in its current condition it would have been one ugly pin.

Looks like a facial piece to a small cast iron dog figurine.

Depending on detector it could be ringing high value because of size. Large objects will come in high sometimes also close to roundness of a quarter could have made it do that also.

It was a lower end bounty hunter detector so it very well could be iron if that's the case. Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to go back soon and see if I can find the rest of it.
