Any thoughts on this unusual relic found at mid 1700s home

Found this pretty deep at 1700s house site in Central VA. Any ideas?

It looks like some type of tarp snap.Could have some relationship to CW leather snap or some type of canvas snap for a tent or something in that order, might have been surplus after the war if it was.You might look under grommet or snap.use vintage or antique in your search.

My first thought was saddle hardware/decoration?
Maybe something that a leather strap ran through, although it's a tad small for that.

Thanks all it has been positively I'd its from a black powder shot canister, it's the cap portion. late 1700's to early 1800's

Believe what you like, but someone is yanking you chain with that ID... Over the years this forum ID'd similar items as part of a powder or shot flask. As more and more of them were posted we did additional research and concluded they are finials off spring loaded Victorian era screen door hinges.

OK. I see it now. I stand corrected. The slot is for the closing mechanism. No chain yanking has occurred, just a nice dinner for me...

A few years ago we had a number of these post on the forum. The were ID'd as shot flask or powder flask spout stoppers - but none had a slot in them like yours. We ID'd them as hinge finials.
