Just found this a few hours ago, I have been looking at this button and I swear I see an eagle. I am not quite sure and wanted to see if anyone could make an ID. I can say this is the site I found the 1765 Spanish silver, a possible early slave tag, and some flat buttons. This one is rounded and it appeared to be a two piece button until I soaked in a little. My guess is war of 1812 or somewhere around that time period. Thanks for the your help

Could be 1812 era. It is impossible to tell from your pictures because they are slightly out of focus. They are super hi-res which is great, but you're too close for the lens to focus the details.

Lay the button on a medium dark (purple or brown work well), non-reflective surface. Use a bright light angled from the side (helps create tiny shadows). You also may want to clean up the back just a little to bring out any back-marks.

And please don't take pictures of relics in your hand. That creates too many surfaces for the camera to try to focus on.

Thanks for the suggestion. Here are a couple photos of the button on a purple piece of paper. Hope this helps

Real old button for sure!
Appears to have text on back,
of this, I believe to be, a Two-Piece button.
My guess early 1800's.
Clean the relic carefully...!

If I had to guess based on what I see, I would say it is a Confederate officer's button.

Can you show us a picture of the back from one side so we can see how the loop is attached? I am leaning towards a two piece button from what I can see of the loop but, if it is a two piece then it would date to the mid 1830s.

What I see is a heavy coat of oxidation obscuring what is underneath. I can see spots where the oxidation is chipping away. If it is a one piece button and it was mine I would try to slowly remove some oxidation.

Recently I saw a snake button that was oxidized (not as bad as yours) and they had amazing results doing soak and scrubs with Fabuloso cleaner. I was impressed and may try that too if I ever have any grungy one piece buttons to try to clean.

I keep emphasizing one piece because cleaning a two piece or three piece button is a different process since you have no way to control what gets inside the button and have to be sparingly with cleaners while working the surfaces.

I'm looking at a one piece button with shank and the eagle facing left. May of these started to be making in the 1812 period and stopped in the 1830's. More cleaning is needed but be careful and do it slow.

I'm thinking closer to Albert AY64. 1830 - 1840.

I believe I can still make out the arrow tips at @ 4 o'clock...

Thanks for all the help on this id. This is a one piece button but looks very much like a two piece, as it is not flat. I soaked it overnight and it is looking much better. Here are some more photos to aid in this near impossible Id. Thanks again

Much better pictures!

Now you can see the arrows and the olive branch in the eagle's claws.

I'll stick with Albert AY64 as a good starting point for a match.

From the new picks it looks much more like this one. That is what I think it is. You can make out the general shape from the new pics

I looked a little more and I think Albert GI79 is the best match. Mexican War era Infantry button. Originally silver plated.
