I was about to say that. I have been using the word for years on my eBay listings. Vintage means is not an antique. 70s items are vintage. Even vintage reproductions have value.

To me, use of the word 'vintage' depends on the age of the user. My 1948 Chevrolet is an antique to me, but to my 81 y.o. dad it is vintage. His 1930 Model 'A' pick-up is antique to him. The same goes for my son's 1988 4Runner. To me, it is 'vintage'...

So I define 'vintage' as an item "not older than the user of the word".

Ok, what about stuff labeled, say, " vintage antique chair for sale " ??? Is the word "antique" a vintage word, or vice-versa ?

I've always liked the ones " restored to original " Like : 1955 Chevy 2-door, restored to original, new paint, new leather int. , 396 4-bbl. V-8, Turbo 400 trams, posi rear, Torque- Thrust wheels, etc, etc, etc, ever seen ads like that? Crazy !

Let's just make a new word for it.

How about VINTIQUE?

My basic general rule of thumb selling antiques and collectables is that 50 years old is vintage and 100 years is antique. Although I see no problem labeling a 70s item as vintage. Automobiles are different. I think 20 years used to be considered antique in Florida and you could actually get an antique tag but now I think its 30. I found this:
In Florida, an antique vehicle is defined as any motor vehicle that was manufactured after 1945 and is at least thirty years old.
Once you lose blue book value, you need to purchase antique insurance if you want any replacement coverage..
The Antiques Roadshow must regularly decide what is and what is not an antique. According to them, an "antique" is, "[g]enerally speaking, an object of considerable age valued for its aesthetic or historical significance. In the antiques trade, the term refers to objects more than 100 years old."

If someone labels an item both antique and vintage would be for the purpose of getting a hit on either word.... This bottle looks like a reproduction made the old way. They make hand blown, applied lip, pontil mark bottles like this in Mexico. I am not familiar with it but the 2 tone glass looks modern. But if it was made in the 70s, it would be considered vintage. I think its possible for 80s items to be approaching vintage.
for the term vintage to accurately apply to it, an item should be somewhat representational and recognizable as belonging to the era in which it was made." Ruby Lane also suggests that 'vintage' should not be used in reference to objects less than 20 years old.
I sold some vintage Wheaton reproduction bottles on eBay because they have collector interest and value. I clearly stated they were vintage reproduction bottles and i sold them for a decent price. 70s era items are collectable.

These are all simply trade standards, but it should also be noted that U.S. Customs has set their own legal definition of an antique, and it is in agreement with the 100 year guideline. U.S. Customs also adds a quality standard to their definition in that, while it is acceptable to repair or restore an antique, the item must retain its original character and be less than 50% restored to be considered an antique.

A quick search and I found this link on the Washington bottle. A quick look at the photos and I dont see your applied lip type reproduction of the original 1876 bitters bottle listed but it does talk about lips, pontil marks and such,....so maybe its modern? :dontknow: I didnt read it. Washington bottles, from Antique Bottle & Glass Collector magazine

Its been years since I collected bottle but it appears these are called Washbots and reproductions were made as long ago as the 1940s and 50s and can have collector value.
View attachment 1313905

I dont see your color or the applied lip. View attachment 1313906

But it may be worth searching further because he says some of these old reproduction Washbots are harder to come by that the originals. My gut feeling is modern made in Mexico but if it was my bottle, I would make sure. Its interesting.
