I found this brass emblem and would like to know age and application if possible. I've found several photos online of a similar emblem, but, the top edge is different on mine. There may be a piece missing as the top edge is a bit rough. The back side is flat and smooth except for a 1/4" X 1" section down the middle where the metal is roughed up....like to make it easier to glue to something? Maybe there used to be mounting stud(s) in that area and they've been ground off?

Looks modern up to when Olds was deleted from GM, could be:
off of a hood ornament, vinyl top emblem, wire wheel cap, etc

I believe Huntsman53 is correct on the watch fob.

I was originally thinking fob also, but, with that scuffed surface on the back, I started thinking that it must have been attached to something at one time. I also can't find another sample with the same shape at the top. I figure it might be an actual car emblem that was broken off. What years did they use that style emblem on their cars?

That logo was 1897 - 1919.

Your piece is a watch fob.

That logo was used on modern Olds...the whole "re-live the past" thing that Auto Makers did with bringing back old logos...like Chrysler for example.

I'm thinking it could be from a modern key tag thing. It would make more sense on how it got lost, compared to what I said before about an emblem from the car itself. Maybe look on ebay for Oldsmobile key chain, etc

Thanks Matt, that looks like the one. It's hard to determine age by where I found it since it was at the beach. It was in a washed out area where I was finding silver coins, so, it could be fairly old. It was really crusty when I found it. I had to soak it for a day just to figure out what it was. I would imagine that it's a relatively modern version of that logo, since way back then, they probably didn't use keys for those cars? When did they start using them I wonder?

I don't know exactly when they started using keys for cars. I do know the first Ford Model T in 1908 used a key. They were crank-start back then but you could still 'lock' the ignition system with a key.

Electric start was first commercially available on the 1912 Cadillac. Ford followed with it on the 'T' in 1919. These used a floor pedal to engage the starter after switching the ignition on with a key.

1948 was the last year Chevrolet used floor pedal starting on passenger cars (it continued into the 50's on trucks). They used push buttons from '49 - '52.

1953 was the first Chevy with "turn key starting".

Being close to half Cherokee Indian and the other half Irish and English, my Dad was an Old Crow and Redman man!:happy2::icon_biggrin: When it came to cars, he bought whatever he could afford but while growing up, I remember a 1948 Plymouth, 1955 Chevrolet, a 1956 Chevrolet, a 1958 Chevrolet, a 1955 or 1956 Crown Victoria Ford, a 1957 Ford Fairlane Convertible, then several 1970's Chevrolet Impalas and Caprices later in life.

I worked there from 67 to 69. I had one of those. They had a program that if you submitted an idea to save money they would automatically give you a gift. The fob was one of them. If they used your idea, there was money involved.

Thanks! They actually used that same logo or the later "Spear"? How long did they use this logo on a fob?
