Hey gang. Hope the image came out. I am VERY new to this and just found what I believe to be a knee buckle. Can anyone tell me anything about it? It has me pretty excited as it is the first what I think is a good find. Thanks for the info!!

I think You are right on with knee buckle. I easily get them confused with shoe sometimes. That is a very nice one

What's the size? And a photo of the back may help.

Put something in the photo for a size reference. It looks too big to be a knee buckle but hard to tell. I would guess shoe buckle. And a really nice one...

I could be a 1950's drive-in theater screen frame, or a miniature curved picture frame. Might also be part of a cast iron stove.

Without a size reference, it's really difficult.

Photos of the back as well, a couple of angles.

We will all guess that it was found in _______________. (type of area helps identify it too)

Without question it is a shoe buckle. It is WAY to big to be a knee buckle. See the difference here:

Knee buckles left. Shoe buckle right.

DCMatt is spot on; it's a shoe buckle, and a nice one.

Buckles that have the spindle running width ways are shoe buckles, buckles that have the spindle running in a length way direction are knee or stock buckles...so nice shoe buckle frame.

Thanks for the lesson. Is this something that's common to find? My friend said late 1700's. Does that sound right? Is it of any value that I should keep it separate from the "junk" I find? Thank you for any info.

Shoe buckles are not un-common, but still an awesome find for any relic hunter. They have no real monetary value. Your friend is correct on the age. By 1820, no one was wearing shoe buckles anymore. I'd give it a nice spot in my relic display. I have a similar style that I found but mine is in 3 pieces. It is in the center of my colonial era relics display.
