It's what's known as a Kyu Gunto.... They were in use by all parts of the Japanese military from 1883 until 1945. Your appears to be the army version.



It's missing the Habaki which is a brass collar that goes around the blade right above the guard, and the pins that hold the grip in place. Are there any matkings on the blade?

If there are any they would be on the tang under the grip. The fact that yours has a pinned on grip, as I remember, means it is likely to be a hand forged blade which makes it a much nicer sword than the machine made versions and adds a bit of value as well. How much I don't know, since I'm not sure what they are selling for but it would be worth researching, especially if it's a signed blade by a desirable maker.
