This is a single reed mouth harp of some sort -- I THINK -- (Therefore I is, right? :P)

I wrote to a harmonica specialist but the schlep didnt write back. I shouldnt say that though, maybe his msg got lost in the spam, the schleps in the whitehouse, for real, but thats another subject....

the brass reed is riveted on, and the 3 I have are in pretty good shape, one shows patd oct 18 1856

it seems many of the military or perhaps the miners, or both, enjoyed the harmonicas of many types for the portable music it created.

Hey, if you've never found or seen one before, "organ reed" probably isn't going to be your first guess. ;D

In fact, I know more than one or two relic hunters who found one with the brass reed broken out of the frame and were convinced that it was some sort of rifle sight. ::)

Just finding stuff is great, but finding out about it can be a lot of fun, too!

Luxefaire--

It has been suggested that you did not find an organ reed as I said, but an accordion reed instead. Below are two photos of accordion reeds. I think that if you compare your find to them, and then to the illustration of organ reeds which I posted earlier, you will have little difficulty in deciding which is correct.

All the best,

I knew What the Organ Reed looked Like, as I have Found many.

I have also found the Square cornered ones and Never Knew They were
Accordian reeds.

It's cool to find out.

Same here! ;)

BTW, there are some brass-framed concertina reeds that look a bit like organ reeds, but they are slightly tapered, have two big screws at one end (Luxefaire's reed doesn't even have holes where such screws could have gone), and are generally smaller. After reading Diving Doc's later posts today, in which he uses the term "squeeze box," I believe that this type of reed is probably what he had in mind. Shown below (top) are some concertina reeds— which do indeed resemble organ reeds more than regular accordion reeds. Nevertheless, if you compare Luxefaire's reed with the two types, I think it's fairly clear which he found.

Also, "bell metal" was mentioned. For clarification, this is simply the alloy from which the actual reed, not the frame, was made. As a matter of fact, bell metal is also used for certain other types of reeds, such as those in harmonica plates.

Thanks for confirming the ID, Jeff!

Best regards,
PBK

Yes I'm sure, I scratched the one Pulling it out & it's Brass Color.
the Empty space is Due to the Reed being Broken off
