I came across a scanned copy of a book written in 1910 that is no longer in print. In the section describing the time when Bienville was Governor of Mobile and the French lands, it states that Bienville and his brother Chateuvgue were recalled to France. They were in rowboats approaching the ship Bellona off of "Dauphine Island" (this was known as skeleton island from the Spanish) when the ship fired a distress signal and "sank before their eyes southeast of the island". It appears the ship was fully loaded for a journey back to France. I have been unable to find any reference where this wreck has been rediscovered. Has anyone ever heard of this wreck?
