Some books on identifying civil war relics contain a lot of wishful thinking. I've posted the following rock-solid proof about the correct ID and the correct time-period of these brass "tent-slip" tent-rope adjusters, many-many times here in the What Is It? forum. (Sigh.) Here's the proof again for you.
Images below:
(1) Original US Patent diagram dated 1880 (15 years after the end of the civil war), showing this specific version of metal tent-rope adjuster.
(2) Copy of original US Army order, first adopting these metal tent-rope adjusters in 1889 (24 years after the end of the civil war).
Like I said, some books on civil war relics contain a lot of wishful thinking.
And so do many-many "civil war relics" sellers on Ebay.
