Hello from ND, first time here, looks like a great community. I found this rock while checking a corn field the other day and it has me stumped. At first sight I thought mechanical damage but dismissed that once I got a closer look, seemed like the groove is much deeper than the normal scratches I see from discs and planters and if the rock was that soft they normally just break. When I picked it up I noticed the flat side was very smooth and glossy. When I thought it might be some sort of tool I placed it in my hand and it fit very nicely, probably perfectly if my hand was slightly smaller. Having it in my hand I then noticed the depressions where your thumb and fingers fall are smoother than the rest of the rock but not as smooth as the flat side. I am in SE North Dakota so known Native American area. Other things that crossed my mind were mechanical damage, early farm tool or glaciated. Any ideas appreciated. I don’t know what this is either, but have always thought it was an artifact.

I guess it could be worked but have found similar rocks here in Maine, As "Tdog" said above, "softer material eroded out". JMHO

Thanks for the replies, will be a nice addition to the rock garden whatever it is.
