Hi All,

We also found this tonight - we have no clue what it is - but, we did see one on another post - but, everyone was ranting about the gold coin (which was rather nice, by the way) and didn't mention what it is.

Anyway, here it is:

Any ideas? Thanks.

It looks like one of the slugs you pull out of the back of an electrical reciptical. But I aint sure...d2

It does look like some type of brake spring retainer, but could also be an electrical box knockout.

See if there is any circular ware on either surface that would indicate that it was in constant contact with a spring.

Also, I would look at the edges ( parallel to the slot ) and see if there is any indication (roughness) of it being torn out of an electrical box.

Personally, I think it's a knockout.

No original thoughts today...I broke my coffee pot this morning and my brain went on strike.

Sort of small for a drum brake spring retainer. The hole and indentation on a spring retainer would have a cross or tee shape. Half of the cross or tee would be the hole and the other half would be a depression if you know what I mean.

I think it looks more like a lead seam weight or a bus token. What is it made of, lead or aluminum? If it's lead it's not a bus token, lead points to a seam weight which most are square shaped. Bus tokens are aluminum.

We found it in the middle of the yard. Nothing around.

And it is attracted to a magnet.

Hope this helps with an identification. Thank you all for your help.

Since it is steel, I vote for a knockout for a utility panel or a metal switch box. You stick a screw driver into the slot and pry it out.

I agree as a knock out from a panel. If it was a brake shoe holder spring, it would have a depression for holding the end of the hold down pin. (You insert pin thru slot, then turn 90 degress and release.)

Thanks for all your help...

It's funny - we found this object (link below) about 5 feet from this one and everyone was saying that it was a tag from a utility pole... Hmmm - wonder what they were doing in the middle of my yard. The poles are quite a ways away from where these were found.

Thank you for all your help.

Looks like a penny to me...1973 to be exact. Hey, what's that to the left of it?
