I found this at an old home built in the mid 1800s. It appears to go on a strap of some sort .

Were the 2 parts connected when you found them? Can you take more pics in natural light including close ups of front and back? Is that a ship's wheel on it?

Yes they were connected. I broke it on accident when i was cleaning it, and yes that's a ships mast. Ill post more pics when i get the chance.

I think it is half a buckle from a vintage swimsuit. Both men's & women's fashion swimwear featured belts from the 1930's thru the 60's and maybe longer. I recall having a suit with a similar 'tongue and wreath' fastener.

BTW... Not me...

I agree... too flimsy looking for "everyday" use...
And with swimsuit it would be of a smaller "variety" of these tyoes of buckles which is what this appears to be...

I don't recall ever IDing a swimsuit buckle. It is possible, I suppose, as there have been lots of unusual bits of junk that have gone through the What Is It forum in my nearly 10 years here.

But I really do recall having a suit with a buckle like that when I was a young-un' in the 60's.
