. . . I dug this at an old house site this past Saturday . . . thought it was a pocket watch until I cleaned it up and opened it . . . I'm clueless . . . any ideas?

Looks like the coins would slide in there and stay under spring pressure... like your coin holders in automobiles... just that this is the pocket version.

Looks like something from the turn of the century (1900 ish) that held a single coin or token (mad money). Does the spring work or is the button and spring rusted fast?
