Any Idea's?

Anyone got any idea what this thing is? It measures 6 and 1/2 long. I was told the building looks like the bell tower near Philidelphia? I think it resembles it but am not 100% sure. Thanks for the help.

Re: Any Idea's?

It's a clock pendulum for a wall or mantel clock, and a nice one! The embossed weight resembles BIG BEN. Breezie

The weight should be down at the screw, which is opposite the hanging hook. On yours, the pendulum weight has either slid upward or someone removed the pendulum weight and put it on backwards. I collect antique clocks, and on most of them, you can slide the weight almost to the top. Of course, the screw at the bottom is turned to regulate the time; shorter pendulum for faster/longer for slower. I'd love to see it cleaned. Breezie

Re: Any Idea's?

Got ya. I bet thats just what happened. I am picking away at cleaning it up some more, had it for a couple years now. Still digging out finds cleaning them and getting them all in place. Thank you again for your help. You recognize the building in it? And are these things worth anything? And how old would this be? Sorry for the questions, just have never found anything like this before. Thanks.

Thank you again for your help. You recognize the building in it?The building resembles Big Ben tower clock in London, but will be able to tell better once it is cleaned. And are these things worth anything?Generally the value is in the finding. ;D Replacement pendulums for antique clocks are not that expensive, but since your pendulum weight is embossed, it may carry some value because most were not embossed. I would concentrate on cleaning it first. And how old would this be?The swinging pendulum clock was invented 1650's, but I'm thinking yours looks more like the Victorian era (1850's) to the Turn of the Century. More than likely it is marked with the company name, which could be New Haven, Waterbury, etc. After cleaning and finding the maker, we'll be able to date it. Sorry for the questions, just have never found anything like this before. :thumbsup:It's a neat find! Thanks.

Re: Any Idea's?

often the weights were movible (up or down) to adjust the speed of the clocks ticking --so that it would run at the right speed to keep "proper time" -- my german made coco clock had a adjustible wieght for just that reason
