I was going through some of my 'junk' boxes and came across this interesting item. Seems like I recall something similar being posted once before but can't find the post. Any ideas?

It's all iron except for the round quarter size piece which appears to be copper. This copper piece appears to have once been able to swivel and close into the iron opening. Obviously, its not movable now. There are no markings on the copper piece. It was found in a corn field in New England.

Thanks,

Man, that looks like a patchbox cover for a flintlock cap and ball rifle. Great find if thats what it is. I cant find a pic online but that looks like the one I had on my .45 Mountain Rifle. It holds quarter size patches. Your pic is kinda dark, is there a screw hole or two in it?

Well, I was really excited when I saw BCH's reply. This field was used as an early training field for a few years. But, PBK's links seem to nail it (as usual) !!!!

Just seems odd that two different metals would be used.

Thanks guys.....
