I found this item the other day at a little town park. It was about 5-6 inches deep and looks to be solid copper or brass.

Looks like a harmonica reed, square nail and maybe...possibly a drawer/door pull. It's shape and that black spot on the top and type of metal kind of make me think it was possibly used outside. I'll ask around and see if it was part of a fence or weather vane.

It's an unused hot rivet. They would heat it up red hot, then it would be inserted through two pieces of metal. One man would hold a heavy weight on the rounded head while another would shape the head of the rivet while it was malleable. This was the method before structural bolting became standard.

Copper/brass are cold riveted. A holed rivet is called a Tubular Rivet (copper backers are usually simple washer shapes). I have never seen a copper one with a shoulder nor conical top (let alone one with both). My guess is that it is a conical bushing (maybe for a weathervane or water well handpump) or a valve seat.

Trailryder,

I found possibly the same thing. I'm leaning towards a center pin that held a wagon wheel on? Shot in the dark

I'm with pearson, it looks similar to some axle bushings and such that I've seen.
