Any ideas on what this is ?

This thing is 2 and 1/2 inches long. Has a clip on one end that shows "Common Sence" and some scroll work on it. Stamped in the middle is " Pat. Dec 29 1885 ".
Only other thing I can add is the clip is spring loaded.

could it clip on a book and swivel to hold the page down?Maybe for a band to hold the music sheet down outside? sweet find nevertheless!

It's a shirt cuff clip from the late 1800's or early 1900's. For more info about these, see the last item on the following page:

The clip shown there is a different brand, but that's what it is.

1880's Shirt Cuff Card Cheat is a variation of the gaming device used to cheat in a card. The button is like a French cuff link to hold the clip inside the shirt sleeve and the clip is used to hold a card up his sleeve.....you know like you hear them say....."an ace up your sleeve". The company Common Sense was known best for making musical instrument parts.
