Any idea's on this one?

I found this piece in a wooded area that turned up some nice old coins and relics in the past. It's about 1'' Dia. x 5 1/2" long. The piece is very light and when I rub it on a concrete surface it leaves a greyish black residue. Any Idea's? By the way the piece is round in case you can't tell from the picture.

Looks like the guts to an old battery to me. I forget what those rods are called...d2

My dad called them carbon sticks, he had many in different sizes in his blacksmith
and welding shop. If something needed welding and was broke through a hole,
we would put the carbon stick in the hole and weld the two pieces together, then
knock out the carbon stick, no drilling needed, welding won't stick to the carbon stick.

Was it found on an old military site? Carbon rods were also used to create the electrical arc in the large search lights used during WWII. (AA units)
