any ideas on this? found on home site that dates back to 1830's.

I think that Rowdy nailed it with his suggestion that it's a part from and iron oil lamp bracket. :icon_thumright:
This type of cast iron was also made to hold potted plans, vases, candle stands and even iron shelf brackets.
