I was thinking more along the lines of lantern parts.

I am with the Navy fella on this. Our house in Germany has all the old brass stuff for our stove and heat grates. The house was built in 1827.

So one day I decided it was time to put a nice shine on these items with some Brasso. It all shined up nice, but I pulled the stove pipe to take down that ring, it was tarnished pretty bad so I started with Never Dull. Long story short it did not look brass when I got done with it. Called the oven people to come over, they said it was more than 100 years old and that I pretty much screwed it up and would be hard pressed to have it replaced. They had it restored for me though.

They said that in these old State Houses that would always be copper and not brass.

So having screwed up one my self I have to say the Navy fella is right.

I agree it does look like a beauty ring for a stove pipe, BUT it would be a very small pipe.
The inside dia, of the ring looks to be about 2 1/4"s or 60mm.
Such a small pipe would only handle a very small stove.
I think ICEWING is on the right path with it being part of a lamp.
Here is one example of a candle lantern.

Having the little semi circle notch out of the side of it takes it out of being a stove pipe ring there wouldn't be a need for the notch.I think lantern glass base and the notch is where the wick height adjusting knob was.IMO.

The bottom of a wick holder for an old lamp. The 4 holes are for the four supports that were riveted on, that hold the glass chimney.

I want to say I have found pieces or have seen something similar on tnet. No recall on an ID. I will agree it does look like some type of decorative trim. The four holes like nails were used to attach or fix to, or they had some very small screws. Second the inside circular flange looks almost convex and longer then the outside flange.. HHHMmmm ??? :icon_scratch: The idea of it looking like not being able to sit flush against a wall on the outside is interesting. Or unless like VP was thinking, it did on outside but inner flange went into pipe or hole in wall... Or some small rivet type attachment to what ever it was fixed too. I apologize, I am thinking out loud.

Since it is brass with embossed decor and has balanced mounting holes, I think it is a ring for a hanging oil lamp.

Neat find :)
