Seriously John Smith? Good luck with that name there are a million John Smiths.

Look an ancestry.com for the person. The tag is generic

Umatilla still exists with a population of about 3800. Unless your John Smith was an unusually outstanding citizen, I doubt their web page could help you much.

I ound a tag with the same style letter stamping, I estamated the date of my tag to be between 1940's to the earlb. 1960's. I determined that date by using the other finds from the area. In this area earlier and latter items were found but that was the general census. Me being a mechanic I think my tag was a toolbox tag.

Hello All. I found this name tag at a 1920's home site. From the type style and "FLA" for Florida, I am thinking that it is from the 1920's era, but with a name like "John Smith" I can't find the link I am looking for. Any tips on how to filter my research are appreciated.

Looks like a baggage or steamer trunk tag. I'd look at census and/or voting records for that town.

Yours looks like it might be from March Air Force Base by Riverside, Ca.

It is indeed from MARCH Air Field, latter the name was changed to MARCH Air Force Base. That change was another investigative tool that helped me narrow down the date, the tag being aluminum helps too.

Hi cudamark, I couldn't figure out a practical way to fasten his tag to a leather luggage bag or wooden trunk using what looks like a meta rivet. It looks like the tag was riveted to another pieces of metal...metal trunk don't know.

Here is a John Smith from Umatilla in 1945, but he is only three years old then. Maybe the tag was his in 1955 or so, then he would have been 18. The only John Smith in Umatilla from 1920 to 1960.

I was referring to the OP's tag as being one off baggage or trunk. Yours might have been attached to a piece of equipment, tool, or tool box. Probably something issued to that particular person.
