Re: the iron in back - is that a shank I'm seeing? If so, I've seen buttons with a small piece of iron, copper, whatever, through the shank. You stuck the shank through the cloth or leather and stuck something through it and sewed THAT. Made the button much harder to lose or come off. Didn't work on THIS button though, huh! Mostly, I've seen that done with leather.
