Could this be a pommel of some sort?

Errr... wait a second... I just realized when scolling back and RE-Saw Tics picture;

That is not a pomander...

The pic you posted is of the "worlds oldest watch"... believe it or not. heh

BUT... I still think your guess is more on point.

Will get involved with a few searches.... I am almost positive.... and am about the watch.

Oh and PS... before I take effort on searching ... the reason I don't think this is incense related it due to LACK of holes.

Not enough airflow.... not enough size... not enough material (thickness) IMO.

Could be part of a "fumer"... aka perfumer locket.. OR hair keepsake... or the likes.

After researching, I believe it might be pipe cover.

After researching, I believe it might be pipe cover.

You might have something there-also known as wind caps. Here is an example of one that has a side hole.

Here's the authors write up.

A second pipe that I have with an integrated wind cap is what is commonly known as Hurricane pipes. This style of pipe was made by several English pipe makers. The one I have is an F&T Shipmate made for Abercrombie and Fitch. The wind cap on it is made of Bakelite and is pinned toward the bottom of the bowl on each side. It is hinged and tips backward toward the smoker for loading and relighting. The first photo below shows the cap from the sides and the top of the bowl. It has the appearance of a pepper shaker. The next two photos show the same pipe with the wind cap opened."[/FONT]
