ANY IDEAS, FOUND IN ONE OF HAMILTON ONTARIO'S MOST HISTORIC SITES

I'm just getting back into this great hobby after being out of it for 35 years. My last detector was a Garrett Ground hog,(long since sold). A friend was over last week and I rediscovered this item and need some help identifying it. It is (I think) made of bronze. It measures 11/4 in diameter and has a sort of knob on the back that I would think maybe it had a wooden handle at one time. In the top right it shows a bearded man peeking in the window. It's been hidden away for all these years, hope someone has got a clue as to what it is. By the way, I'm 75 years of age and today I ordered an Ace 250, wish me luck.

It's a neat little risque little item. No Idea what it is. How wonderful that you are getting back into the hobby! Always a chance to go outside and get a little exercise, and who knows what you might find. That's what keeps me at it.
Good luck and God bless!

Tucker, cool seal, just don't show the grandkids.

You're going to love the Ace250. I got one a few weeks back as my first detector and have been having a ball with it. My next purchase is going to be a handheld pinpointer. Some of the more experienced guys on this site highly recommend them.

Good luck and I'll look for your posts.

Don't know what it is, but I want it ;D

Hi from the UK, I hope I'm still detecting at your age. If I am I will open a museum!

Welcome & happy hunting from the UK :)

Tucker,

Welcome aboard. Glad to have you with us. I honestly don't know what it is. Glad you are back in the hobby (addiction) of metal detecting. Don't be afraid to ask us any questions. There are a lot of knowledgeable and friendly folks here.

It's a 19th century risqué or erotic button and is listed in Peggy Ann Osborne's About Buttons, "Cultural Reflections," p. 96. At the time of the book's publication (1994), the button was estimated to be within a value range of $24-50.

Hi there PBK. Thanks for the info, BUT, I find it hard to believe that the item I show is a button, I don't have a scale but it is VERY heavy and really shows no indication as to how it would be attached to anything other than a handle of some sort. Does it show a pic of it in the publication you mentioned?

It is pictured, but I can't scan and post it due to copyright. Also, it's quite dark in the book and probably wouldn't scan anyway. Perhaps it's just a case of the same design being adapted for different decorative uses: button, knob, etc. Whatever the case, there is obviously no mistaking the image... and it's in the book!

Don't think so. On a seal die/matrix the design would be incuse, so that it would appear raised on the wax impression.

I stand corrected...

Must look at everything in its proper perspective.

That would probably accentuate this token or repute!
