I have thought about this one for a long time, leaning towards it possibly being used to assist in weighing objects and such.
The ring comes loose when u squeeze it together and back.. Maybe to put a strap in, then pointed end goes in with something like a cotter key... 7 1/4 in.from ring to the bend. 4in.from the point to the top squeeze bar.
Told ya i've been thinking for a while...

My whole process exactly...HAHA

One more thing, its obviously been made by a Blacksmith, no marks that i can see.

I have seen something like it before, but I can't for the life of me come up with a name for it right now.....

I know what you mean, i think we all do it from time to time. It will come to you in due time.

I'm guessing it's a wrought iron skewer holder ?

Use for hanging small game?

Where did you find it? What part of the country?

honestly there is no telling where grandma or grandpa came across this, missouri now, they used to live in Iowa. You would literally not believe what i have found in this basement, but i photographed the things known and unknown...

It was likely mounted to a wood handle.Out here we find what are called box rakes...they look kind of like a pitchfork, but were used to rake rocks frome the Long Tom's.They have a tang identicle to your item....for what its worth

I agree with Matt that it would work well to hang small game, foul, or fish... But couldn't find one like it...
So how about a mop head holder? Not that I could find anything as primitive as this, but the size, etc. would work for the old style mop heads. (fastened as Kuger mentioned, then the release feature to clean or replace the mop head).

Doubt it was for game or mopheads, but it may have been used for drying dyed yarns or ribbons.

I think the scale idea fits best. The shape allows for different weights to be added to match the weight of the unknown item. Maybe your find slides along a bar.

I have yet to hear from the blacksmith, but i have also had the mop theory myself.
