Looks like it's got some other designs on it besides what you said. Can you give us a little bigger pic? Looks interesting. Thanks. -Noodle

I'm almost sure the one on the other page is a tuning key for a stringed instrument.
Most likely a banjo.
It has a hole in it to pass a string, and doesn't come to a complete point, like this one does.

Bigger pic would be nice...

Here are some dimensions of a buffalo horn banjo tuning peg. I believe the sizes are comparable to your brass item. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Banjo-Part-Buffa...hZ010QQcategoryZ10177QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

It may have been held in place by the grooves just under the thumb flat part. Maybe the grooves wore out and it was discarded and replaced. Just a guess.
Does yours have any remains of a groove? We could use a larger clearer pic if possible. It does look like a banjo neck with frets.

No groove thing necessary.... they are just held in position by friction.

Yep, gears is better, that's why almost all new ones got geared pegs.

There's special reamers to get that taper... for dulcimers and stuff.

and I'll go back on myself... a drilled hole is NOT really necessary.
just the string wrapped over itself would probably do.

I can see someone using buffalo, ivory, or something pretty, but not a base metal.
But no telling!

My efforts as a luthier have all failed... so far! ;D

Once built a samisen for a stage prop, and there may still be a dulcimer kit around here!

I can see them being held in by friction and string tension. Here is SFHunter's Unkown item with OK Oil's. He says his is aluminum. His letters are S Co. Oil's C Co. The Co would stand for Company, i presume. I notice Oil's C is upside down. For top strings, maybe? :icon_scratch:
