Good guess. The size and weight and shape are right for a sash weight.

here are more pics but, I believe you got it.....the one thing we did notice is how heavy it was......A weight ...that explains why so heavy

Chagy, thanks for the additional pix. Mojjax nailed this one, it sure looks like a sash weight.

Seeing as how you found it at the beach I'd go with the more romantic tale of it being a sounding lead for measuring depth from a ship. Unlikely they'd choose iron, but it coulda happened. ;) It was also common to hang a weight at a depth less than you were anchored at so if the watch spotted the "messanger" line trailing at an angle it meant your main anchor was dragging, you were in shallower water and an alarm was sounded.

I like the idea of a sounding lead. I've got something similar that I dug on Cape Ann, MA several years ago. Still has the rocks on it as I've never attempted to clean it, but it sure is heavy.

A lot of people used sash weights for small boat anchors. Good call.
