Any guess what this could be. It's about 7" tall weighs about 8-10lbs. Square hole all the way though it that is about 1 1/4" square. Writing on front says: W-18

Well, there are no threads or moving parts. It is one piece of cast iron. This was found in a place that is yielding items from the 1920's to 1940's. I should have put these details in the first post. Sorry.

I should have said "part of a lock"... But now of course I can't find the thread from the recent one... Second guessing myself a bit... Maybe it was Mojjax who ID'd one. And, as always, I may be wrong.

Looking at the square hole and the rounded part of the casting I believe it's the part of an old water pump that attached directly to the well or spring pipe. I can remember when the only running water in my grandparents house was one of these pumps attached to the dug well that was underneath the kitchen floor.

Sorry, scrap my previous idea, I found the link I was thinking of and it wasn't the same thing.
An old well pump casing could be right... I'll look around and see if I can actually be of some help :tongue3:

Thanks for the help. A pump part sounds promising. I'm in Texas so maybe it could even be off of a small oil well grasshopper pump.

It looks real similar to the disk blade spacers used on a horse drawn disk most of them had a square hole.
