I am curious as to what the purpose of this rock was. It is coming up for sale at a local auction house in a few weeks and the seller only describes it as an odd rock. I am pretty sure it was Native American Indian but I have no clue as to what it could be used for. I figure this would be the best place to find an answer. I have no other information to give other than the photo.

Thanks for yalls help.

definately looks man-made - too small for a grain grinding stone, but maybe used to grind certain substances for paint purposes? I have also seen stones with holes this size used for cracking nuts.

Just out of curiousity, I wonder how many nuts would you have to crack to make holes like that? Someone must have been at it a looooong time! or, tough nuts! Whoa!!
Strange there are so many holes?
Good luck!

Nah.. the holes are ground and created.. then the nuts are placed in the holes to crack thenm.. easier to crack and easier to pick out the meat

My holey rock is at the end of the post Breezie referenced. I am so glad I don't have to go out to the garage and find it again. Made with love by momma nature. At least for the thousands on the beaches of Oregon.

I gather tons of them from the southern beaches of Lake Michigan. I use then to make sun catchers. Found this and thought I'd share:
Holi Stone (Holed Stone)
Stones that have one or more nature-made holes in them. These hard to find stones are considered powerful protection worn and hung at doorways
or windows to protect a home or business. To prevent nightmares, these stones are placed in the sleeping place of the one who wishes to be free of
nightmares. Also said to be bringers of high psychic powers. This is noted in folklore to be most powerful when one looks through a hole in the stone to
see visions and non-corporeal entities and beings. They are excellent for meditation and creative visualization. Holey Stones are related to the water
element.

It could very well be natural but it doesn't look like the "holes" go all the way through. Notice the table is a darker brown than the interior of the holes. I'm still leaning towards some type of drill holes.

Go to the end of the post that Breezie referred to. Many of those don't go all the way through, either. Just how it is. Ma wasn't done with it when I yanked it.

I'm not going to get involved in the debate, but will say it would be very useful as a bearing stone as used in the bow and drill method of fire starting.

One would wear down two or three sticks with the perfect "sandpaper" before one was able to obtain fire. Wood on wood, in the configuration you suggest, would be more effective, and much lighter to carry around. Maybe they used them to make drumsticks.
