It looks like there is a groove at the left end that would correspond with the attachment on the right. I would guess whatever it is, it hung from two chains,

A bit of background information on where you found this piece might help point us in the right direction for an I.D. JC. :icon_scratch:

KRESKOL seems to be correct with the left sided groove. They used to make swing bars for play grounds very much like that. There would be a string of these hanging from chains and the idea was a child would swing hand to hand to cross this chain. My second thought was maybe it could be a vintage toilet paper hanger. :)

Thanks, guys. Adding a little more info that Johnny didn’t have:

Found in New England, public area, wide range of dates, mostly 1880-1920, but also colonial as far back as 1650.

Except for the loop, both sides are identical, with about 4 grooves each, but not threaded. Wire loop is parallel to the shaft, and doesn’t appear to have been bent. It’s unclear whether or not there might have been another loop on the other end. Would not support the weight of a person hanging on it. Feels more like something would have been tied to it. Solid brass.

Thanks for your ideas,
Dan

Maybe part of the hanger for a Victorian pendant lamp.

Thanks, everyone. Matt, I think you may be onto something. I see some very similar looking things, hanging Victorian ceiling lights together. Appreciate it. Dan
