Any idea on this object? Civil War related?

Found this about 6 inches down on an old civil war Battlefield in VA. Any ideas if this is civil war related? Never quite seen this before. Thanks in advance

some type of horse bit related item I would think..

I think it could possibly be a reign holder off a wagon. I found this one in VA and I think I saw one similar to the piece you have here in my Civil War relic book. I will look tonight. I know it is a totally different shape but may have served same purpose.

Yours is a Terret Ring, which guide the reins on the back of the horse.
