In the back of my grandparents property I find a lot of crude iron objects like this. I'm trying to figure the age out. I'm wondering if they are hand forged items. I've heard stories that a house once stood back there but I've done research and up to 1850 as far as I can go back there was no house there yet I find a lot of old latches and bites of plates and random items. 20191222_101215.webp20191222_101234.webp20191222_101248.webp20191222_101257.webp

They definitely have an appearance of hand forged... but ?

Hard to say.

Yeah I have no idea. Perhaps the soil is just rough on iron

Perhaps after work I can post more examples I've found.

looks like plain old angle iron to me , could have been a part to many things, maybe cut from a bed frame to do a repair.

years ago before public landfills , people would dump their junk in the woods . I often find these piles along old dirt roads in the woods. piles of cans are very common to find.

That as well could be true it is behind an irrigation ditch. The irrigation ditch has been there since the 1850s so cold of been an area people dumped things

If it is wrought or hand forged, you can tell better after some clean up. Look for a grain in the rusted and pitted areas.

When I find early pieces of iron like these are farm sites, my first thought is usually wagon or barn door related hardware. :icon_scratch:
The truth is these fragments could have attached to any number of items on the farm.

I took a close up look at the screws or nails that attached the metal piece and I think I can see threads.

now you're getting into some relics, I see those single tree hooks on flea bay for 10 bucks. I like to keep mine though.
save the iron to practice your relic preservation skills on. so when you find something really cool you'll have it down .
