I will measure the button when I get back home, but I think it is much larger than 1 1/4" diameter

It is also as thick or thicker than the 1798 one cent piece

The button measures about 1 5/8" in diameter. What kind of clothing would this be a button for?

The large flat buttons aka Dandy buttons were very large. Some come with edge designs or floral and the designs appear to be done by hand. They were a clothing button. I love digging them as it tells me I'm in an early site.

So they were decorative on coats or shirts? Is there a book that I can buy for colonial button references?

I believe that functional is a better description.

I don't believe that there is enough design/makers mark background for anyone to produce a book other than just a pictorial of dug flat buttons. Even when flat buttons have a maker's mark unless the maker produced military goods then there are not enough records to research the maker. As an example this plain flat button was made by Hammond Turner & Sons (1823-1860) who also made military buttons. They made this button for John Bowen & Co. Obviously John Bowen & Co was a clothing manufacturer. I cannot find any info on the latter as he must have been strictly civilian.

I would certainly be interested in getting such a book also.
