Hi Mike

Can you take a picture of the add-on bit.
All of your photos show that part in a side view.
A front view would be helpful.

Sort of looks like a stovepipe section for a wood stove possibly to me.

My guess? I agree with DG...in a round about way...motorcycle exhaust. Don't laugh :D

It does appear to have heat marks on it.

Maybe something that goes around a wick. Along the lines of a camp lantern. The small half holes for oxygen.

Or like DG suggested for an auto or as River Rat says motorcycle, and the little "butterfly" was tack welded to part of the engine.

Still trying.

guys I got out of it about a year ago but I was an automotive technician for several years and I have never seen anything like this on an automobile, I have also worked on more than my fair share of motorcyles and cant say I have seen anything like this on a bike either.... I have been wrong before though ;D

Hi Mike. It sounds like we have similar backgrounds, mechanically speaking. I agree that its not from a car (we would see the clamp marks). But on one of the motorcycles in my stall I found a similar piece... its not exact, so its only food for thought. If I happen to be right, the attached part would have originally have had a stud protruding that would have gone through a frame bracket to secure the exhaust at the front of the muffler. Anyway: for comparison, here's this:
