This looks to be a padlock keyhole cover. It was recovered at a 1730's vintage house, along with the brass buckle, 1912-D wheat penny and a bunch of other stuff.

This appears to be identical to the drop (keyhole cover) on an unattributed 19th century wrought iron lever padlock, or "smokehouse lock," illustrated in Arnall's book, The Padlock Collector— page 44, #26, Bob Dix Collection.

That would make sense. It was found in the vicinity of the still existing springhouse.
