Several things come to mind. Needle holder for phonograph first. Change holder or stamp holder from a small desk.
Last on the list, some type of ink well, but thats sort of far out.

That is also possible. But normally those are square bottomed rather than rounded. Another thought is for mixing water color type paint. The more I look at it that seems a very distinct possibility. Are there any decoration or markings on it?

I think I remember hearing about how some inks were made from a solid and mixed with water.

Very interesting find. No doubt it was a container for something. Ink is not too far fetched. I know nothing of inkwells, however, the two compartments may well have been used for a solid and a liquid, respectively. It may well have been intended to hold red AND black ink. I believe that the item was to be placed into another container or holder. The top being slightly arched and the bottom flange being entirely flat all the way around the underedge shows me that it was placed into a square-type recess as might be found on a desk. Just my thoughts.

Don't worry though. PBK should be along shortly ;D

Hi no markings I'm wondering if its not way newer than the nickle there are no markings anywhere and it appears to be silver plated or just chrome.
