This appears to be copper and is 1 and 3/8 inches in diameter. There is some worn off lettering on the sides, but I can't make it out.

I believe it is definitely a Brazil 80 reis coin. I'll find a decent pic.
Here's one that has been 'overstamped' and the denomination changed to 40 reis, but the coins look almost identical.

This is an 1828 which puts it in the reign of Emperor Pedro I, possibly placing your coin Goat Rancher, in the period 1822 to 1831.
Of course this is all supposition on my part ;D

Yes, Brazil.
Reverse: +IN+HOC+SIGNO+VINCES (The IN HOC is barely visible in the margin area to the left of the globe. IMO its an 80 reis (pic is upside down) from the reign of either Peter I (1822-1831) or Peter II (1831-1889)

Here's a similar pic (1828): http://www.muenzen-hardelt.de/bra-80r28c.jpg

Can you tell us where/when found? ;D

Mike

Thanks for the welcome guys. I found this yesterday about 10 feet from a 1851 Large Cent. Both were in the front yard of a house that dates back to the mid 1800's. I am in Southern Indiana BTW. Would like to give you the Google Earth coordinates for this find, but then I would be parking cars and not detecting. ;D ;D ;D

Wow.....quick ID on this for sure. I wish I could pull a date, but don't think it will be possible. It's sure good to know what it is and from what time period. Thanks again. :icon_thumright:

the date possibaly 1908 is it mabye bronze instead of copper?

Nope.......I think these guys have nailed it down pretty good. I believe, in looking at similar coin comparisons, that it is indeed in the reign of Emperor Pedro I, in the period 1822 to 1831. Looks like that beats my oldest coin to date which is 1837. :hello2:
