Well it was not the seal I was trying to identify, it was the backmark, time period, what kind of military personal wore it. Thanks for your help.I heard that it might be post civil war.Just trying to figure out what it is .I found it in an area that is known for civil war activity. The rebels burned down the courthouse in 1862 I found this about 300 yards from the courthouse in the woods.thanks.jeff

Your back mark: SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY dates: 1850-1865

Confederate. Although Missouri never "official" seceeded, they were considered a confederate state.

Who would have likely worn this type of button?

Likely an officer... it's a gold gilted staff button.

Post Civil War

The backmark matches Plate B-6 2)C in Warren Tice's "Dating Buttons" book and it is listed as 1879-1890.

check out this site.....lists the exact backmark as circa 1860s, scroll down to the last listing for scovill

jsu's button backmark is not there, none of those match his, Tice is the button expert and in his book as I referenced is the exact backmark with the 1879-1890 date. :)

The difference is in Co(Small o) with the underline, that is what exactly matches the later button.
