I'm interested in knowing where you found the button - it may be an English Livery Button - even though it has no crest - some didn't.

Doesn't look Livery to me. What does the back look like?

its a capital L in latin style
This sign is simply a capital letter L, written in old-fashioned roundhand, with one or two crossbars to show that it is being used as a symbol or abbreviation.
