I have a basket that I have had for years. I am trying to figure out if it is old and if possible who/what group of people made it. This is not a "buy at the big box store" type of basket. It is some sort of "grass" wrapped in a "leaf" (Please look at the second image). They outer wrapping looks almost like corn leaves, but I am in no way sure about this. It appears to be hand made.

It also looks like it is one long piece that is wrapped together. Take a look how the spiral starts in the middle, in the bottom and works it's way around. I did not put anything in the image for size reference, but it looks to be 8-9 inches in diameter. Any help on this is appreciated.

Hey Doug,
First of all I'm not a basket expert, but have bought/sold many through the years. Yes, your basket is made of corn husk. Many Native Americans made baskets and other items from corn husk. From what I understand, Indians would prepare corn for storage and to do this, they would braid the husk back from the corn while the corn ear was still on the stalk. This made a nice rope for drying/hanging the corn ear in storage. After the corn had dried and was removed from the braided husk, the husk were then used to make baskets, shoes, mats, etc. This explains why your basket is in one long 'rope' type weave.

Neat basket :)

Since I can't see the basket in person, it would be difficult to determine the age.
