I dug a 1873 shield nickel yesterday and want to clean it up a little and try to get some detail. I tried dry brushing and toothpicking but the green oxidation is pretty darn hard and the tooth picking seems to be polishing rather than removing the crud.

I was thinking about trying the hot H2O2 method.

Thought?

Whatever you do don’t do what I did and used a Brillo pad totally ruined my only shield and I’m still sick over it. I want the full date so bad I got greedy.

The before pictures won’t upload and maybe that’s for the better. Rookie mistake. Never again
