Hi all,

I found this piece in the ocean near a very old area that I have hunted for years. Known to find buttons, buckles from the 1600's up to 1800's. I'm a bit baffled on this one. It is heavy like lead, has the remains of a leather strap on one end and a hole in the opposite end. Any thoughts on this? Also not sure about the smaller piece, appears to be of brass material. I was not sure if it could be some sort of Civil War primer or just plain ol' junk. Thank you for any ideas.

Could it be a duck decoy anchor? Or posibly a sounding weight but the hole looks to be to small for a good sample? HH

The photo is from a dated find, it's a sounding weight and it's 5 1/2 inches tall and 1 1/2 inch in diameter, so it looks like you nailed it.

What is the inside dameter of the smaller piece? I'm thinking it may be a lube/sizer for lead bullets.

Hi I think you are right on the sounding weight. That would make sense as to where it was found. I'm sure there were ships in and out of there long ago. Thank you so much for that info. As for the smaller piece I will have to take some measurements. It is probably not all that old.

What was the date for your image? HH
Broken Knee
The photo itself is dated 1747, I found it on the internet, and it came from a wreck somewhere in Florida. There was also one that was larger than the one you found. I had to learn about sounding lines when I was in the navy, and then we never used one, but my recollection is every 6 feet there was a different colored mark, and if say the 6 fathom mark was out of sight, then you hollered, "by the deep - 6," and now you know everything I know about sounding weights.
