Crispin,

I'd say it's the outer case of a pocket knife....judging from the half moon cut out sections.

I thought the same thing at first. Why would that be silver. also, what about the circular know on top?

Thanks,

What that is is a pipe stamper. Should have had a blade in it to removes ash, etc.

Are you sure that it's silver? Not doubting you but that looks like the arm on my Leatherman tool that forms half of the folding tool, and hold the knife blade, can opener, and other tools. These tools are stainless steel, and would appear free of corrosion as your find does.

Crispin, you are making me jealous! It snowed here last night and into this morning!

It is definitely silver. Testing it with kit. When I pulled it out it was black as night. It took a whole lot of boiling with baking soda and polishing to get it to look like that. I played with it some more and got two of the broken off pieces to move. they are stopped by a slanted mechanism from extending their angle and further.

My second vote, after looking at your second set of pictures would be a pipe tool. I can't see one, but most of those tools had what looked like a small spoon on them?
