I've been hunting large area in some woods near a river. I've been literally crawling threw the bushes and vines to find open areas to swing. I've even walked up on some deer and turkey who were like "WTF are you doing out here??" Anyways, I keep finding these old nails....

My question is, how old are they (1700-1800's I think?) and I am also debating wether to give up on this area.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance ~,,~

Cut nails, although they are still used by ferriers, went out of common use around 1900.

Yea... I agree... turn of the century prolly... but, only you can find out the history of that area.

As far as hunting it, it all depends on your desires... do you want to find relics? This trash indicates people, or a person was there at some point. There will be more stuff... it all depends on if you want to play amateur archaeologist or just find coins.

There is a great chance of finding more relics... and maybe??

Well, I know for a fact that some really old coins were pulled out of this same area, some 300+ years old. I guess I forgot to mention that....

Actually... I am just about to once again head out there in a few mins. Wish me luck!

as was stated above --cut nails (square nails) except for horse shoe use when out of common use about 1900 thus the nails most likely are at the very least 100 years old with a good chance of being much older. --- no doubt with the iron nails you are finding there are relic items about ( wheres theres 100 year old iron" trash items" --as folks wrongly call square nails-- there are other items it stands to reason -- I call items like square nails --"date / location nails" -- they tell you "hey look around here cuz folks where living around here 100 or more years ago"" (and most items were lost close to home being thats where you spent most of your time back then)

I've done a little research on nails. While most that I have been finding are square headed, several of the nails I have are also wrought head, which were made by hand, not machine, in turn making them pretty darn old.

Now... if only fall were here so I could cover more ground.... :(
