Antique hook?

I found this metal detecting today where an old hotel in the late 1800's used to stand. It has a hook on the bottom of it. Can you guys help me figure out what it was used for ?

--But I should add: that's what these have been ID'd as before, but I've never been able to find one online with this hook. It was on the word of someone here that knows (or claims to anyway) about wood stoves, who explained that these are connected to a spring... or maybe a linkage... now I don't remember for sure.
