Any help appreciated !! ... what you see is all one solid piece of metal I just dug.
I'm not a gun guy so what I think I have here is a left-handed gun lock plate?
Age? Type? The place I dug it goes back from the late 1700's to the early 1900's... I really need help as I have poured over hundreds of photos online in hopes of finding this same shape to no avail.

1880 to 1910. I'll have to see what I can turn up. The round action plate should be a good tell.

Try narrowing your search a bit, looks like a single shot shotgun in my opinion. Search for shotgun side plate or something similar. As you can see from the pictures it is a center fire gun with hammer less design. Best of luck!

Yep looks like a single shot shotgun action. Would have had a side cocking lever similar to this one, that would be the reason for the side cover.

Single shot shot gun, but the circle side plate has me wondering what make of gun it is.

Model 1893 Remington Maybe.

Taz! I think you have it! That picture matches up quite nicely... Thanks to all of you for helping solve this mystery! I was hoping for Civil War of course but I guess I will have to head back out to the field. The one you pictured above... is this the 1893 Remington?

Thanks,
Dan
